What Is Ume? The Japanese Plum Blossom
The Japanese plum — ume, also called mume plum or Japanese apricot — is known by this name in Japan, while in China it is called meihua. Ume begins to bloom while the weather is still cold, from early February until the end of March. It is a small, elegant tree with bright pink flowers and a yellow center that produces small green fruits by early June. The fruits of ume are almost never eaten raw because of their intensely sour taste, however they are used to produce umeshu plum wine and umeboshi — fermented salted plums.
I personally grew fond of the latter, although for most people in Western countries, it seems to me the flavor would feel rather exotic. A similarly sour and salty sauce is also made from umeboshi, and just as is commonly done with whole plums, it is added to rice or savory meat dishes.

People outside of Asia often confuse pum trees with sakura, yet their flowers show noticeable differences, as does their blooming season — sakura begins to bloom from the end of March to mid or end of April and does not tolerate strong cold. Plum blossoms, on the other hand, are often associated in Asian culture with endurance, resilience, and inner strength.
Sometimes it even seems to me that this is a true gift from heaven — a tree that blooms so beautifully in the cold and gives hope, reminding us that even the coldest season will eventually end, and spring and abundant blossoms will return again. Perfumery, meanwhile, gives us the opportunity to enjoy the delicate scent of plum blossoms at any time of year.

Plum blossom has a sweet honey-apricot aroma with syrupy nuances, the intensity of which changes greatly depending on temperature — on warm days the scent becomes stronger, sweeter, and more aromatic.
Plum Blossom Perfumes 2026 — Fragrances Inspired by Ume
Ume Keiko Mecheri — Jammy Plum Blossom with Osmanthus
Ume by Keiko Mecheri conveys this sweet, almost jam-like aroma of plum, while the apricot nuances are emphasized by a note of osmanthus. The floral sweet heart of the fragrance is framed by slightly sharp patchouli with a small addition of spices — they prevent the balance from sliding completely into sweetness. Supporting notes include mahogany wood, silky camellia, and the light florality of peony, jasmine, and wisteria.
Ume sounds beautiful in cool spring air. If you enjoy sweet fragrances with a hint of patchouli, you will most likely like the plum interpretation by Keiko Mecheri.
Feminité du Bois Serge Lutens — A Plum Blossom Second-Skin Fragrance

Feminité du Bois by Serge Lutens seems to me not only one of the best fragrances on the theme of plum blossom, but it is also my favorite in the category of feminine, delicate “second skin” scents. In Feminité du Bois there is nothing sharp or overly sweet — it is a gentle veil covered in plum blossoms, perhaps even petals, resting on a light woody base. It contains subtle fruity nuances of peach, white flowers, and the softest sandalwood. This fragrance can easily be placed in the category of elegant seduction — silk on soft skin and tenderness, like the touch of a loved one.
Elysian Velvet Plum Tea — Realistic Blooming Plum
In Elysian Velvet Plum Tea I clearly hear blooming plum. This fragrance is complex — at first it is a bright, almost jammy plum, perhaps even its pulp, but very soon fragrant notes of osmanthus and black tea enter the symphony, balancing the composition with a slightly astringent character and earthy hints of patchouli. Floral notes of rose and warm honey join in — this entire whirlwind of notes creates a very realistic, velvety scent of blooming ume. It is a true spring fragrance.
J-Scent Ume Amaretto Oath / Profound — Plum Wine in a Bottle

J-Scent Ume Amaretto Oath / Profound is my favorite plum fragrance for the cold season. However, in my opinion this is not the smell of plum blossom, but rather of sweet umeshu plum wine, which is traditionally served warm. It contains bright plum notes with almond-like alcoholic nuances of amaretto, along with subtle orange undertones. In the floral heart roses, jasmine, and mimosa unfold, while the base is wrapped in notes of dark chocolate, grey amber, and patchouli.
Musc Noir For Her Narciso Rodriguez — Velvety Plum Petals
Musc Noir For Her by Narciso Rodriguez is a musky, delicate plum fragrance with the addition of fragrant heliotrope in the heart and suede in the base. Musc Noir is a gentle fragrance for the end of winter and the beginning of spring. In the trail it blossoms into soft velvety plum petals.
Be My Plum Montale — Powdery Green Plum
Be My Plum by Montale is an unsweet, powdery plum wrapped in a creamy cocoon of white flowers thanks to notes of tuberose and coconut tiare. At the opening there is specifically the note of green plum or umeboshi — it lacks the strong sweetness or juiciness one might expect, just as real Japanese plum fruits do. It is a very soft fragrance with moderate projection and nuances reminiscent of skincare cosmetics. Be My Plum is an excellent fragrance for early spring.

Have you ever come across a perfume that captures the scent of plum blossom particularly well? I would love to hear your thoughts and personal favorites. If you have a fragrance in mind, feel free to share it in the comments.
